Description

Georges Lecomte, Silversmith - Solid Silver Covered Box, circa 1925

This elegant, circular covered box with gently domed sides exemplifies the refinement and modernity of French silversmithing between the two World Wars. The body, punctuated by vertical ribs highlighted with stylized, hand-chiseled plant motifs, rests on a flat base.

The lid, with its slightly convex profile, is decorated with a radiating motif around the central knob, shaped like a stylized seed.

This piece, typical of Georges Lecomte's style, reflects the transition from Art Nouveau to Art Deco, combining simplified naturalistic motifs with a quest for formal balance.

French Goldsmith and Coppersmith

A discreet yet essential figure in French goldsmithing between the two World Wars, Georges René Lecomte belongs to that generation of artisans whose perfect mastery of technique lends each piece a singular presence. Trained by Bouvard and then by the master goldsmith Eugène Lelièvre, he acquired early on the keen sense of proportion and surface that would become his signature.

Throughout his career, Lecomte collaborated with several major Parisian houses – Risler & Carré, Keller, and Fouquet-Lapar – to which he brought his taste for refined simplicity and firmly constructed volumes. His meticulous and consistent hammer work gives rise to pieces whose surfaces seem to vibrate with a soft light, as if smoothed by a patient and sure hand.

Present in various exhibitions between 1927 and 1953, he left behind a body of work that was both measured and precious, where each object testifies to demanding craftsmanship, controlled elegance and a very personal sense of modernity.
